Hiring a car on Menorca is a great way to take advantage of the many walks along the coastal paths and in the slightly mountainous interior of the islands. The Cami de Cavalls coastal path is an ancient walkway that circumnavigates the entire island. For the first time in more than 400 years the pathway has now been made available to the public after many years of restoring and making safe some of its more dangerous and dilapidated cliff top areas.

Menorca's rugged coastline provides many hiding places in secluded coves. Today tourists use these quiet spots to have a picnic, to swim and to enjoy the relaxing quality Menorca has to offer, but in ancient times the rocky coast provided many opportunities for attackers to take the Menorcan people by surprise. The public right of way on the pathway is occasionally limited, so the official map of the Cami de Cavalls should perhaps be taken with a degree of scepticism.

One section that is most certainly open to the public and is easily reached by arranging a rented vehicle via car hire Menorca Airport is the Cala Estaban (also referred to as the Cala Esteve) to Algaufar route, which starts at the car park overlooking the Cala Estaban. On the official tourist walking map this is designated as the purple route.

Hikers should cross the car park at Estaban and take the pathway down into the Cala. The road leads to a white villa, which sits in a corner overhung by cliffs. To the left of the villa the path starts in earnest, going up and over the cliff. There are dry stone walls with wooden signposts marking the coastal path for the entire 4.5 km length of the walk. The whole trek should take longer than 1.5 hours. The views across the rugged Menorcan landscape littered with ancient white fincas and occasional grazing land full of inquisitive livestock is interspersed with glimpses of the azure sea twinkling between the rocky chalk cliffs.

Eventually hikers arrive at Sant Lius, where they can take the red route leading to Cala Alcaufar beach (0.8 km walk) or where they can opt for the green route, a 0.7 km walk to S'Algar. At Cala Alcaufar beach there are a few dining facilities for an impromptu lunch followed by a refreshing swim in the sea and a snooze at the beach afterwards. At S'Algar hikers will find a larger choice of restaurants and bars as well as a lido for greater entertainment.

Of course the pathway can also be taken in reverse, starting the journey at Sant Luis or at S'Algar. Walking back, it is comforting to know that the hired car will be waiting to provide rest for tired feet.
